Developing Literacy – Introduction

Although progress in literacy tends to follow a developmental progression through particular stages, the pace will vary depending on the individual pupil.  Environmental factors have an impact on the rate of progress as well as the multiple and complex learning challenges that some children face.

Although the movement through each stage will vary greatly from one child to the next, the typical order in which skills develop tends to be the same regardless of age.
