Pen Fifty Words – January 2018

In a month full of conversations of ‘new’, the Scottish Book Trust’s ’50 Word Fiction’ for January 2018 encourages us to explore the ‘old’.

This month’s ’50 Word Fiction’ from the Scottish Book Trust asks you to ‘Write a story that features an old piano.’

The deadline is Wednesday 31st January 2018. The Young Writers category is open to all children and young people under 18.

‘And Tango Makes Three’ – Lesson Plan

During December we will be sharing the lesson plans published by Highland Council’s Equalities Improvement Group and LGBTI+ sub-group to support the development of Equality and Diversity across the curriculum. 18 picture books have been selected; for each picture book there have been lessons created for Early – Fourth Levels (Curriculum for Excellence) driven by the Literacy and English and Health and Wellbeing Experiences and Outcomes.

Today’s Lesson: ‘And Tango Makes Three’ – Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell

Roy and Silo are just like the other penguin couples at the zoo – they bow to each other, walk together and swim together. But Roy and Silo are a little bit different – they’re both boys

‘And Tango Makes Three’ is a brilliant story which explores different families through a family of penguins, challenging the fairytale stereotype of a family being a man, a woman and children. This text celebrates that all families are different.

‘The Dot’ – Lesson Plan

Today’s Lesson: ‘The Dot’ – Peter H. Reynolds

Her teacher smiled. “Just make a mark and see where it takes you.”

Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a gentle invitation to express herself. But Vashti can’t draw – she’s no artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and angry mark. “There!” she says.

‘The Dot’ is a great text which can be used to develop self-belief and achievement with children and young people.

Once there lived a prince whose mother decreed that he must marry by the end of the summer. So began the search to find the prince’s perfect match and he found him… his name was Lee.

‘King and King’ is a great text which promotes and celebrates family diversity, challenging some of the stereotypes promoted in traditional fairytales to ensure that everyone feels that they belong.
