Raising Attainment in Literacy, Language and Communication – Developments during the 2017/2018 session

Highland’s Literacy Strategy from April 2017 detailed three areas of development for the 2017/2018 session which are reflected in the in-depth action plans:

  • Taking a developmental approach to Emerging Literacy (The Emerging Literacy Team will continue to lead this)
  • Persistent Literacy Difficulties (Jenny Wilson will lead this – information on Jenny’s offer is attached and training will be added to the CPD calendar)
  • Structured approach to Reading Comprehension (Aspects will be trialled this year and will be rolled out by the Authority during 2018/2019).

The Emerging Literacy Team (Highland Council) will continue to develop Highland’s approach to Raising Attainment in Literacy, Language and Communication: Taking a Developmental Approach to Emerging Literacy. For more information, check out the April 2017 Emerging Literacy Update.

Jenny Wilson, Literacy Development Officer (Highland Council) will be developing Highland’s approach to Raising Attainment in Literacy, Language and Communication: Persistent Literacy Difficulties. Please see the support which will be available through Jenny below during the 2017/2018 session. More information will follow after the summer break.

Aspects of reading comprehension are being developed with Scottish Attainment Challenge schools with Louise Kinnear, Scottish Attainment Challenge Literacy Officer, during the course of the 2017/2018 session. Learning from this will help shape the Authority’s approach to training on Structured Approaches to Reading Comprehension during the 2017/2018 session.

The Highland Literacy Blog will undergo a facelift during the 017/2018 session to streamline materials and add new materials for the key agendas in 2017/2018.
